John and I decided each time I am in Perth that we should take on a project, like the last time it was the kitchen floor. We were online when we discussed the next project. Since airplane tickets are so much money, getting new furniture all the time is out of the question. John had two sets of tables and chairs given to him, both old, and one set was one too many. We decided which table to keep and that the project would be to re-upholster one set of chairs that belonged to his parents from the 70’s.
When we discussed it online, we thought it was only going to be a matter of changing the fabric, something I had seen my mom do before, and helped her with. Upon closer inspection, John saw nicks in the wood and grime that was never going to come clean. He decided he was also going to have to sand and refinish the wood too.
Not only did it need new fabric, the wood sanded, the foam in the chair also needed replacing.
So soon enough, the chair was in pieces.
A few hot days on the porch after work, John hand sanded the chair wood. He soon added an electric sander to speed the project along.
Using the old chair, John created a template from cardboard.
New foam for the chair.
Waiting for the fabric.
New clothes for the chair 🙂
The ‘new’ chair next to another old one.
One more look at the chair, photo taken from the porch, to compare with the very first photo that John took, the first one on this blog.
One chair done, five yet to go.
Nice together project. Oh you think John did all the work?
Well I helped too, I helped pick out the fabric and upholstery nails. 🙂
a couple of extra bits to mention
the wood didnt get stained, just clear satin Minwax rubbed on so the grain is now visible and we went for brass upholstery nails and brass screws to fasten the back in. I would of liked slotted raised countersunk ones so I could set them with the grain, not the flat Phillips heads, but you cant have everything I guess.
I think I have picked up a few ideas for the other 5 chairs though
Nice job – both of you!
Great job guys, a new lease of life for some very old but comfortable chairs. Love the fabric choice too Barb, you did well there. xxx
