Jacarandas in Perth

Jacaranda is a genus of 49 species of flowering plants in the family Bignoniaceae, native to tropical and subtropical regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. It has been planted widely in Asia especially in Nepal.

It’s also been planted in Australia. I’ve had flights take off and in landing where below was a sea of purple. Both Perth and Sydney take-offs and landings left a lot to behold below.

Now generally, John and I only take photos of natives, but the amount of these trees clustered together are too impressive for my camera to pass up, and he indulged me, even at some point where there were few places to park, dropping me off, driving around and coming back to get me after I had taken my photos.

We did not photograph them at their peak, but there were almost as many flowers on the ground as there were on the trees, we were hesitant to wait any longer.

Since this meant a drive around the city, I couldn’t help but get a photo of the Bayswater Bridge,  it has become well known in Perth and has received significant media coverage for being frequently struck by tall vehicles – at least 36 times since 2014. There is even a website to count the days that it hasn’t been hit.

It’s thought that the Jacarandas in Perth were native to Brazil and were brought to Australia via England in the 19th century, have flourished in Perth thanks to the subtropical climate and the ability of their seedlings to sprout from falling seeds.

We were relatively happy to park at this street to get a few photos.

Another street we stopped at, but it was hard to get a photo without power lines
A shot I was kind of hoping for, Jacarandas and Perth in the background. Not quite.
Well for the most part, I think there should be a movement that when you buy a house, they hand you a seedling for a native tree, but I wouldn’t object to everyone also getting a Jacaranda.

A stitched image, I tried to get everything in one photo as best I could.
Well Purple sets off Art Deco quite well. The Applecross Hall opened on 15th September 1934. Movies were screened from 1940 to 1961. The Applecross Hall is still there, but no longer screens movies. The Applecross Hall is now used for people to hire for community events, and live theatre(known as Tivoli Theatre).

Not sure where and when people or councils bought these trees, a search to get one was difficult.
last photo of Jacarandas
Last photo. I enjoyed the trees, and seeing new places in Perth. I think I found a pizza place I need to try…
