Fremantle part 1

Fremantle is a hard place for  me to get my head around and to describe to others. It reminds me of Annapolis in that there is a harbor and it’s very historic. There really is more to it than that. It has Aboriginal history, it has this whole Navy and Submarine base background, it’s a fishing town, a University town, it has a historical prison, but it also has this bohemian, artsy, carefree, relaxed ambiance amongst buildings that look like they are straight from the French Quarter in New Orleans. It all combines to make it a very unique place. The people in this area refer to it as Freo.

We start by going by the looney bin. Well this used to be an insane asylum using convict labor to build it. It’s now an Arts Center.

We arrived a bit early to find an open parking, so we walked around this Naval Memorial. This is dedicated to the fallen soldiers and sailors.

I couldn’t resist a view of the memorial with this anchor in front. Memorial Hill is also a good place to go get a great view of all Fremantle and surroundings.

Among all the old and heritage buildings in Freo are many churches.

The boys school across the street from the church.

A quiet place with a nice fig tree.

Now the last time we came to Fremantle, we wanted to go to the Markets but didn’t have enough time. We wanted to be sure to get to see the markets today.

Built in 1897, the markets house over 150 shops for craftspeople, fashion designers, and merchants in the historic Hall, and fresh food producers, vegetable growers and food retailers in The Yard. The Markets are typically open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and are a popular Fremantle tourist destination considered “a Fremantle institution”

It was a warm day, everything looked mouth watering.

A happy surprise. cheeses from around the world including John’s favorites from England.

Huge paellas cooking away, also a happy sight. It was hard to stop your eyes in any one place so much to look at. We did made one purchase besides the cheeses, who knew Emu oil cures everything?
