Earth Day Should Be Every Day

Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.

~Genesis 2:15

Keep (Hebrew shamar) means “to exercise great care over.” In the context of Genesis 2:15, it expresses God’s wish that mankind, in the person of Adam, “take care of,” “guard,” or “watch over” the garden. A caretaker maintains and protects his charge so that he can return it to its owner in as good or better condition than when he received it.

So every day should be Earth Day.

It’s what my mother taught me. She was conservative with her usage, her care for her part of the world. She might not have had the resources to learn that we have now, but she sure did a lot of reading and as much as she could glean, she exercised in her care for her surroundings.

Environmentalists seem to think they own Earth Day. In fact, some of their views of the Bible is in error.

To environmentalists, letting man have dominion over the animals and being told to subdue the earth means that God gives man free rein to do anything he wants to the planet—bend it to his uses and abuses, rape it of all its beauty and diversity—for his own benefit. “Does not the land have any rights?” they cry. “What about the plants and animals, birds and fish? What gives us the right to mine and burn and kill without care for nature?”

Certainly, God did not give man the authority to degrade and destroy His earth. Environmentalists are correct in saying that mankind should consider and address environmental concerns. They are quite wrong, however, to blame God for the earth’s ecological problems; He is not responsible for man’s destruction of the natural world.

To think that God gave man carte blanche to plunder and destroy the earth is simply ludicrous. He is its Creator! Why would He immediately command Adam to ruin it? Would any woodworker, upon just finishing a beautifully stained piece of furniture, tell his son to break it up for firewood? No! Just as God desires for His creation, the woodworker would put his handiwork to use and also care for it by keeping it waxed and dusted to prolong its life.

* The first Earth Day was celebrated in Central Park, 1970, a million people showed up.  They destroyed the great lawn.  It took years for the great lawn of Central Park to recover.  According to Rush,  “Earth Day, as it was established, is a political, quote, unquote, commemoration, holiday, don’t know if a holiday, but it has a political objective behind it.  And it is rooted in an anti-capitalist political belief.  It is designed to create in minds of young people like you that you in your natural state are destroying the earth and you must pay attention now to not do that anymore.  And the way you can not destroy the earth is to do what Democrat politicians tell you to do and accept all tax increases to fix the damage that you’ve caused.”

I believe Rush is right, because if you watch what they DO, and not what they SAY, there is rarely a connection between the two. They’re phonies. As an added interest, Earth Day is also Vladimir Lenin’s birthday.  Vladimir, by the way, is Russian for “Lord of the earth” or I’ve seen “Lord of the World.” Not sure if there is a real connection there.

So forget what THEY say, their crazy predictions, their destroying carbon taxes,  and respect God’s creation, with this gift comes great responsibility.
