We were staying in Spencer, but for our first outing, it was to be the hardest (for some) day of our vacation, we had to drive a little out of the way to get to Letchworth State Park. But since it was a day with a 14 mile run planned, I think my children wanted it to be the first activity of the vacation. (Hardest thing done first).
Spencer, New York, is a village located in the Town of Spencer in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 759 at the 2010 census. The village is the location for the first settlement of the town, around 1794. It was called “Drake Settlement,” at first, but the name was changed to “Spencer” when the town was organized and the village assumed the neighboring community of “Milltown.” The village was popularly called “Pumpkin Hook” in the past.
Looking back, I think Laura was sad we didn’t extend our drive to Niagara Falls! My children went off first, so the rest of us loaded into Miranda’s car, and we set the gps from Spencer to Letchworth. We were surprised at where it took us!At first, it seemed a nice remote way to go…Soon enough, we were off road and bumping in all directions.Maybe not soon enough, we were back on the highway…I love drives in the country, and even though we are at top posted speeds, I like to get out my camera and take photos of what I see. John likes to call them “drive by shootings.”I love seeing farms, cornfields, and especially barns! Not sure if it goes back to visiting my granddad’s farm in West Virginia, but old barns seem full of stories and wonderment to me.Not one barn, but two here. What stories must they tell?Silos are cool, too. Barns by the side of a country road surrounded by greenery, is a lovely sight too. After our off-road experience, next came fog. I had to wonder, since we were coming through later, what kind of fog did my children drive through. I was told it was even worse for them!Sometimes the fog was very low and dense.I am sure the mountains are lovely, but we saw only the bottoms mostly!Off and on, we’d see clear views with no fog.Windmills and clouds…One more barn before we drive into Letchworth.
To be continued… we were excited to see Letchworth State Park, also known as the Grand Canyon of the East…
