Baltimore Gas and Electric
Now I don’t want to sound like I am complaining in this blog post. I mean, as of this writing, I am warm, my house is heated, the electric is purring nicely, I have hot water, and basically everything is running fine.
Today, because of a heavy, wet, and wicked snowstorm, I know so many people who do not have electricity, and it doesn’t look like they will until Saturday or Sunday, some 3 days with any.
So, on Facebook, I have seen many a complaint against BG&E for the lag in help.
My problem with BG&E is completely different.
Back in September of 2010 we started to add on to our house. Now I was out of the country for the start of the construction, but apparently the Gas and Electric company had to take the wiring that comes from the road to our house and put it on some wooden monstrosity. I understand in order to build upwards those wires and cables had to be moved temporarily.
As of November, the addition has been built. Now, January, some five months later, and in spite of a few phone calls to re-hook us up, that monstrosity is still there.
Now this contraption is very awkward to walk around and frankly, I find it dangerous. I avoid it when I can.
But now, with the snow fall, the wires are sagging, but more than I think they would if those wires were nicely attached to the house like they ought to be.
You can see the wires and branches and other odd debris…
And in this photo, you can see how if one wasn’t careful, they could hang themselves easily, just getting to their car.
So, I am not complaining, as I said, we are heated and everything is running smoothly.
But for how long?

Yes, that temporary installation needs to be removed and a permanent connection installed directly to your home.
One more thing you can do if you have not already done so is to lower the price you are charged for the electricity you use. Due to changes in Maryland law, you can choose the energy company that supplies the electricity delivered to you by BGE. If you choose a low cost supplier, you can reduce your BGE bill.
When you choose another supplier approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission, BGE delivers the electricity, responds to emergencies, reads the meter, and does the billing just as before. None of that changes – except that the price charged on your BGE bill for the electricity supply portion of your service will be lower. There is no service interruption. Nothing is connected or disconnected.
You can get your electricity for about 8% less than what BGE’s current price. To see how this is done and to see the price difference, go to http://www.lowerelectricityrates.com and click on the tab for BGE. It takes about four minutes and costs nothing to lower the price of your electricity.
