Light
I sit here in the dark with my flashlight on….
Those who know me, and those who read my blog, know that I live in a house with issues.
It seems the house I have grown up in, the house I have moved back into with my children is getting old.
I think I have blogged about everything that has decayed, wore out, broke, or gave up the ghost in the past, practically breaking out in “This Old House” chorus, and we aren’t necessarily with the means to fix it. Windows won’t stay open, closet doors have fallen off, toilet wiggles, the ceiling has caved in the basement, and in my room, my ceiling light won’t turn on. It used to turn on if someone stood there and held it, now it won’t turn on at all.
A few nights ago, I woke up at 4 in the morning sensing instantly something wasn’t right. As I got up to look around, I saw that many of the lights were not working. I checked the box in the basement and spotted one breaker different from the rest. I tried to flip it over. It flipped right back. I have no idea what happened while we slept. While we have had issues in the past, (with another breaker), we never had one not flip back to its original position.
I talked to one of my best friends yesterday, it was her birthday. Myrna was telling me that she was applying for a job and they asked her, “How do you handle stress?” She told them, “I laugh a lot.”
That sounds like Myrna. I spent many days of my childhood with her and we laughed a lot. Not a lot has changed because during my one hour and 45 minutes conversation with her the laughter was definitely a large part of our time together.
We had a laugh about the house issues for sure.
Anyway, since I am here without light, I thought I would add quotes about “light” to my blog. 🙂

Who is more foolish, the child afraid of the dark or the man afraid of the light?

There are two ways of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. ~Edith Wharton
Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.
~Maori Proverb
The hero is the one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by. The saint is the man who walks through the dark paths of the world, himself a light.
~Felix Adler
A sensible man will remember that the eyes may be confused in two ways – by a change from light to darkness or from darkness to light; and he will recognize that the same thing happens to the soul.
~Plato
Ever since we crawled out of that primordial slime, that’s been our unifying cry, “More light.” Sunlight. Torchlight. Candlelight. Neon, incandescent lights that banish the darkness from our caves to illuminate our roads, the insides of our refrigerators. Big floods for the night games at Soldier’s Field. Little tiny flashlights for those books we read under the covers when we’re supposed to be asleep. Light is more than watts and footcandles. Light is metaphor. Light is knowledge, light is life, light is light.
~Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider
In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary. ~Aaron Rose
A smile is the light in the window of your face that tells people you’re at home.

Your life is something opaque, not transparent, as long as you look at it in an ordinary human way. But if you hold it up against the light of God’s goodness, it shines and turns transparent, radiant and bright. And then you ask yourself in amazement: Is this really my own life I see before me?
~Albert Schweitzer
An age is called “dark,” not because the light fails to shine but because people refuse to see it.
~James Michener
Wow, Good thing you have backup. 😉
Hi Barb,
I can empathize, considering that the old part of our house was constructed between 1840 and 1842 and most of the rest was added in 1970-71. One of our electric circuits blows the fuse when the dogs bark too loud!

Thanks for sharing the laughter. What about George (wasn’t that the name of your ghost?) Has the house gotten so old that he has moved out? And also do you still have to ask before you flush the toilet? 😉
Myrna, the ghost was/ is Elmer!
